Cooking Traditions

When pikelet making is on the calendar at Ambridge Rose, everyone is keen to get cooking. The kitchen team make the batter from scratch and the activities facilitator, Zarina, calls on healthcare assistants to help residents with cooking.
Pikelets are a Kiwi tradition and many of the residents recall making them when they were younger. The simple recipe is a good one and many families remember piles of pikelets filling hungry little tummies when children arrived home from school.

At The Cottage there is always a bit of a production line, with residents taking turns to cook with Zarina and then, Jimmy slathers the pikelets with butter and jam.
You’ll often hear a call, “not too much Jimmy” but who doesn’t like lots of toppings on their morning tea treats.
