In June, we shared some of the key differences between a rest home and a private hospital, and how different types and degrees of care might be right for you or your loved one.
This month, we’re sharing some key tips in finding the best facility or provider for you or your loved one and help you understand the type of care you might need. As part of your research, we recommend you spend some time to learn about key points of differences.
Location
While amenities are important, we find proximity to family and friends is often front of mind for our residents. Being close allows for more frequent visits, maintaining that important sense of connection, and may be helpful for families that like to be more involved in care planning.
At Ambridge Rose, we encourage family visits and provide a vital connection to families of residents who may live outside East Auckland through our AgedConnect app.
AgedConnect enables staff to share regular updates about our residents’ activities with their families. We find utilising this technology helps maintain the connection between residents and their loved ones, particularly those based overseas who are unable to visit frequently.
First impressions and atmosphere
When you visit a private hospital facility, pay attention to first impressions. Is it a welcoming environment? Are the common areas bright and inviting? Observe the interactions between staff and residents. A positive atmosphere is a strong indicator of a good quality of life and that sense of care and respect that we think is so important.
The heart of the facility – staff!
At Ambridge Rose, we take care to hire qualified staff who also have a passion for aged care, as we find they have the compassion, knowledge and skills suitable for our facilities. We are affiliated with Manukau Institute of Technology, to help healthcare students train in aged care and nursing for older people, which we believe is a sign of a great team and a great place to work.
Personalised care
Every resident is unique, and their care plan needs to reflect that. If you are researching facilities, we recommend you discuss how care plans are developed and reviewed.
Some good questions to ask are:
- Is there a collaborative approach involving the resident and their family?
- How are personal preferences, cultural needs, and individual routines incorporated into daily life?
A good private hospital facility will strive to maintain a resident’s identity and routines as much as possible. At Ambridge Rose, we take care to consider each resident’s personal preferences, cultural needs and individual routines, as well as incorporating family wishes wherever possible when we are developing our tailored healthcare plans. This enables us to deliver innovative care with a holistic approach, as well as what is required for their healthcare needs.
Medical and health services
For care in both rest homes and private hospital facilities, we recommend you enquire about the availability of medical professionals such as registered nurses and frequency of doctor visits.
At Ambridge Rose, we provide 24/7 care from our qualified clinical team and healthcare assistants and have an on-call doctor available to undertake routine appointments and medical care.
We’re also highly experienced at making arrangements for specialist appointments off-site, as well as providing a seamless service between our own private hospital and Auckland public hospitals to ensure the best care is available for our residents.
For hospital-level care, delve deeper into their medical capabilities – do they have physiotherapy or palliative care services on site or readily accessible?
Activities and Social Engagement
A fulfilling life in residential care extends beyond medical needs. Ask about the range of activities offered. Are they varied, engaging, and tailored to residents’ interests and abilities? Do they encourage social interaction and mental stimulation? See if residents are actively participating in group activities and enjoying themselves. A vibrant activity programme contributes significantly to well-being.
At Ambridge Rose, residents participate in a range of diversional therapy activities across our four care facilities in Auckland.
Accommodations for food and dietary requirements
Food is more than just sustenance, it’s a source of enjoyment and comfort. Enquire about meal variety and dietary accommodations.

Is the food nutritious, appealing, and served in a pleasant environment? Are residents’ cultural or dietary restrictions considered?
At Ambridge Rose, all food prepared for residents abides by New Zealand nutritional guidelines, with food sensitivities and dietary requirements strictly adhered to. At all of our facilities, meals are prepared on-site in commercial-level kitchen facilities to ensure food safety and hygiene.
How does the facility ensure the safety and security of my loved one?
Safety and security are non-negotiable. Ask about security measures, emergency protocols, and how the risk of falls and other common injuries are mitigated in their facilities. And for those with cognitive impairment, inquire about specific measures to ensure their safety and prevent wandering.
Ambridge Rose’s three dementia care facilities, The Villa, The Cottage and The Beach House have secure access and integrated walkways to help residents move around safely. Walkways, ramps and stairs have handrails for assistance.
Making a decision
Choosing the right residential care or private hospital facility is a journey that requires careful consideration, open communication, and often a collaborative effort between the individual seeking care and their family. It’s about finding a place where comfort, dignity, and excellent care converge, allowing for a fulfilling and peaceful chapter in life.
